I agree that PhDs should quietly quit in academia. Why should anyone work hard for their own destruction? PhDs are not indentured servants. Whether your PhD student, postdoc or faculty member, you should stop letting administrators and the academic system pile the work of 3 or 4 other people on top of you to keep the dying system afloat at the expense of your own career progress. Do enough to get your degree or to finish your time in your current position, but that's it. It's time to prioritize your job search and the next step in your career instead. Spend as much time and energy as possible exploring industry positions that are right for you, restructuring your CV into an industry resume, and setting up informational interviews with other PhDs already in industry. Get excited about your work, career and life again.
